Why You Can't Think Your Way Out of a Feeling You Can't Name

If you're an overthinker, you already know the pattern. Something's off. You don't know what. So your mind starts generating theories maybe it's that thing you said on Tuesday, maybe it's the email you haven't replied to, maybe it's just you, generally, being too much or not enough. Forty tabs open, none of them the actual problem.

Here's what I see constantly in Reiki sessions: someone arrives saying they're "stressed" or "off" or "not sure why they feel like this." Twenty minutes in, what actually surfaces is something far more specific. Guilt. Resentment. Being stuck. Feeling exposed.

The stress was never the real thing. It was the fog sitting on top of the real thing.

Overthinking runs on vague feelings

This is the part most people miss. Overthinking doesn't run on real problems it runs on unnamed ones. A vague feeling gives your mind unlimited material to work with. A named feeling gives it almost nothing. That's why naming it accurately can shut down a spiral faster than any amount of trying to reason your way out of it.

Not "why do I feel like this." Just: what is this, specifically.

A tool for finding the actual word

I designed this Emotion Wheel for exactly this purpose people who live in their heads and need a faster way back to what's actually going on underneath.

Six core feelings sit in the centre. Eighteen more specific ones sit around the outside the words that tend to be a lot closer to the truth than "stressed" or "fine."

How to use it:

1. Start on the outside ring. Find the word closest to what's actually going on.
2. Trace it back to the core feeling driving it.
3. Say it out loud or write it down. That's the exercise. No journaling required, no need to know why yet.

Naming it is the interrupt.

## Where Reiki picks up

This is also exactly where energy work comes in. Once a feeling has a name, it has a location — a place it's actually sitting. That's the difference between understanding something intellectually and it releasing. Insight without release just makes you very articulate about being stuck.

The wheel gets you to clarity. A session is where it actually shifts.

Try it

Download the Emotion Wheel by right-clicking and saving, and put it somewhere you'll actually see it: by your desk, in your journal, wherever you tend to spiral hardest.

You can also find the wheel in the Healing Hub

And if naming the feeling only gets you halfway if you already know what you're feeling, and you're still stuck in it, that's usually a sign it's sitting in the body, not just the head. That's exactly what I work on with clients in Overthink Less, Live More, my 8-week Reiki experience for people who think their way around problems instead of through them.

If 8 weeks feels like too much to commit to for a first go, start smaller. A 60-minute Reiki session is available distantly or in-studio in Fleetwood no need to decide on the whole thing before you've tried any of it.
